Club Baloncesto Estudiantes, S.A.D., known simply as Estu and as Movistar Estudiantes for sponsorship reasons, is a basketball team based in the city of Madrid, Spain. It is a member of the Asociación de Clubes de Baloncesto (ACB). Founded in 1948, it is one of the most recognized basketball teams in Spain.
Some of its achievements include winning three Spanish Cups and reaching the ACB Finals in 2004. The club is also particularly famous for its renowned youth programme that has produced many Spanish talents over the years such as Alberto Herreros, Nacho Azofra, Aíto García Reneses, Alfonso Reyes, Felipe Reyes, Carlos Jiménez, Iñaki de Miguel, Pepu Hernández or Juancho Hernangómez.
History
The club was founded in 1948 by a group of students (the "Estudiantes") of a public preparatory school (the Instituto Ramiro de Maeztu, IRM) in Madrid.
By the time when the first Spanish-wide season-long championship was organized in 1955, by the Spanish Basketball Association (FEB), it was one of the six clubs participating in that tournament, as the second best team from the Province of Madrid (the first being Real Madrid. Until 2021, it had always participated in the premier Spanish basketball league along with Real Madrid and Joventut. It was also one of two only Spanish basketball clubs with teams both at the top male and female Spanish championships.
In May 2012, Estudiantes was relegated for the first time in its history from the top tier of Spanish basketball, but remained in the league because LEB Oro champion CB 1939 Canarias didn't present the required documentation and money.
Clubul a fost fondat în 1948 și a câștigat de două ori campionatul Spaniei, în 1963 și 1968. De asemenea, Estudiantes a câștigat de trei ori Cupa Spaniei, în 1963, 1992 și 2000. În competițiile europene, Estudiantes a atins finala Cupei Saporta în 1999 și a câștigat EuroCup Challenge în 2015.
Echipa este cunoscută pentru stilul său de joc atacant și pentru abilitatea de a produce jucători talentați. Unii dintre cei mai cunoscuți jucători care au jucat pentru Estudiantes includ Alberto Herreros, Fernando Martín, Felipe Reyes și Sergio Llull.
Estudiantes își joacă meciurile de acasă pe terenul WiZink Center din Madrid. Sala are o capacitate de peste 15.000 de locuri și este una dintre cele mai moderne și mai bine echipate arene de baschet din Europa.
Echipa este susținută de o bază pasionată de fani, care creează o atmosferă electrizantă la meciurile de acasă. Estudiantes este o echipă respectată și admirată în Spania și în Europa, și este considerată una dintre cele mai importante și mai de succes echipe de baschet din lume.
